Police Launches Violent Crime Response Unit in Cross River

In a major step toward strengthening security and modernizing law enforcement operations, the Cross River State Police Command has inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), marking a significant shift in the State’s strategy for tackling violent crimes.

The initiative is in line with ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.

The newly created VCRU replaces existing tactical formations such as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Anti-Kidnapping Squad, and Anti-Cultism Squad. The restructuring is aimed at establishing a more coordinated, efficient, and intelligence-driven framework for responding to violent crimes across the State.

The Unit has been mandated to provide rapid and professional responses to kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, and other violent offences. The integrated structure is also expected to improve operational coordination and optimize the deployment of security resources.

Speaking during the official launch in Calabar on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Rashid B. Afegbua, described the initiative as a strategic move toward modern, accountable, and community-oriented policing.

According to the CP, the Unit is built on the principles of professionalism, integrity, and strict respect for human rights.

Afegbua announced CSP Titus Udofia as the Commander of the VCRU, noting that the Unit’s headquarters is situated at the State Command Headquarters in Calabar, with operational coverage extending across two strategic sectors — the North Axis covering Ikom and Ogoja, and the Central Axis covering Akamkpa and Ugep.

He further disclosed that officers deployed to the Unit underwent rigorous screening, vetting, and specialized training focused on intelligence-led policing, lawful use of force, and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.

The Commissioner emphasized that unlawful stop-and-search operations, harassment, profiling, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated.

According to him, the initiative reflects the Force’s commitment to rebuilding public confidence through ethical and accountable policing practices.

To promote transparency and accountability, the Command also introduced a dedicated complaints and feedback channel, urging residents to report grievances or misconduct through the following contact: 08137083052, or at the Complaints Desk of the Police Public Relations Office, State Command Headquarters, Calabar.

The Cross River State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through professional, humane, intelligence-driven, and accountable policing, while calling on residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information on criminal activities and security threats.
