The Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, has assured residents of the Nasarawa Community in Calabar Municipality of urgent intervention following the devastating impact of gully erosion that continues to threaten lives, property, and critical infrastructure in the area.
The assurance came from the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Chief Victor-Felix Idem, during an inspection visit to the erosion site. The visit followed repeated appeals from community members over the worsening environmental challenge.
The gully erosion has reportedly destroyed sections of roads and endangered several residential buildings, posing serious risks to residents, especially during heavy rainfall.
Chief Idem was conducted round the affected areas by the Coordinator of the Hausa/Fulani Community and Vice Chairman of Ward 10 in Calabar Municipality, Alhaji Shaibu Uba. The Commissioner was warmly received by community leaders, youths, women’s groups, and residents who turned out in large numbers to express appreciation for the government’s prompt response.
During the visit, stakeholders and residents took turns explaining the extent of the destruction caused by the erosion and passionately appealed for immediate government action to prevent further deterioration.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner acknowledged the severity of the environmental threat and assured the community that their concerns would receive urgent government attention. He emphasized that the administration of Governor Bassey Otu remains committed to the safety, wellbeing, and development of communities across the state.
According to Chief Idem, the matter would be presented before the State Executive Council for urgent consideration, with a view to attracting immediate intervention and sustainable solutions to the erosion menace. He noted that unchecked gully erosion could lead to massive displacement of residents, destruction of infrastructure, and loss of lives if proactive measures are not taken promptly.
“The government of His Excellency, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, is deeply concerned about the welfare of the people and the continuous development of our dear state. We understand the urgency of this situation, and I assure you that your complaints and appeals will be adequately communicated to the appropriate authorities for necessary action,” the Commissioner stated.
Speaking on behalf of residents, the Chief of the Hausa/Fulani Community in Calabar Municipality, Alhaji Sani Baba, appealed for swift intervention, stressing that the erosion had continued to expand dangerously within the community. He expressed optimism that the state government would act promptly to address the challenge and safeguard lives and property in the area.
Residents also commended the Commissioner for personally visiting the community to assess the situation firsthand, describing the visit as a demonstration of responsive leadership and genuine concern for the plight of the people.
